Well…..That Didn’t Go as Planned! Cabbage Casserole Fail

cabbage casserole recipe fail
Spoiler alert: This cabbage did not survive the casserole.

If I’m anything, it’s authentic—especially when it comes to my blog. You know how some blogs and social media feeds look so perfect? Immaculate photos, flawless results… and hardly ever a glimpse of the behind-the-scenes fails. And let’s be honest—we all know they happen. Well, not here! My blog is about real life. Like this Cabbage Casserole Fail. I started with a good, basic recipe, tweaked it a little, and somehow ended up tossing the whole thing straight into the trash. 🙃

🥄 Where It All Went Sideways: Inspired by Brenda Gantt (Bless Her)

So here’s the backstory. I saw Brenda Gantt making a cabbage casserole and thought, “That looks pretty tasty—I can do that!” I didn’t follow her recipe to the letter, but I didn’t go too far off track either. My version included cabbage, onion, Roma tomatoes, cream of mushroom soup, sour cream, sharp cheddar cheese, crushed Ritz crackers, and butter. I mean… what could possibly go wrong with that lineup, right? Plus, my husband loves cabbage any way you serve it up!

Let me be very clear—this was no fault of Brenda Gantt’s recipe. I love her southern cooking and have made plenty of her dishes with great success. This disaster? I fully own it. 😂

I fully planned to blog about this cabbage casserole and even took plenty of photos and video clips along the way. The finished dish actually looked pretty good—I mean, you throw a Ritz cracker and butter topping on just about anything and it’s gonna look presentable.😅

🥬 What Went Wrong?

I’m honestly not sure what I did wrong. Maybe I didn’t chop the cabbage small enough… maybe it didn’t bake long enough… maybe there wasn’t enough liquid. Who knows? What I do know is that the cabbage had the texture of shoe leather. Now, I’ve never actually tasted shoe leather—but after this experience, I feel like I’ve got a pretty good idea. 😄

Would I Try It Again? Absolutely.

Yes, I definitely plan to try this cabbage casserole again—because the flavor was there, no doubt about it. It was the texture that went sideways. Even the onions were a little crunchy, and not in a good way. So I’ll try again, as Forrest Gump would say))) 😄

Next time, I plan to chop the cabbage and onions into smaller pieces and steam them until they’re tender. Then I’ll mix it all up and bake.

🗣️ Tell Me I’m Not Alone Here…

So that’s the tale of my cabbage casserole fail—proof that even with the best intentions (and a perfectly innocent head of cabbage), things can go wrong in the kitchen. 😅

Have you ever had a similar recipe fail? Please, do share in the comments and help me feel like I’m not alone out here in the chewy cabbage club. 😂 I’d love to hear your stories—and maybe learn a tip or two while we’re at it!
