Simple Moments: Wild Honeysuckle on the Trail

Simple Moments on the Tanglefoot Trail: Wild Honeysuckle Memories
Wild Honeysuckle along Tanglefoot Trail

Every now and then, you just need to step away from the computer and go outside for a bit. We took a quiet bike ride on the Tanglefoot Trail—one of those old rail trail Mississippi paths that’s perfect for slowing down and enjoying the simple moments. Along the way, I started noticing patches of yellow honeysuckle growing wild along the fence lines, something easy to miss unless you’re moving at a slower pace.

🌼 The Honeysuckle Memories

The honeysuckle brought back memories of being kids, pinching off those little fragrant blooms and tasting the drop of sweetness inside. There’s something about wild honeysuckle that just takes you right back. The scent is light and sweet—nothing overpowering—but it’s there if you slow down enough to notice. Walking or biking along the trail, it’s the kind of simple moment that’s easy to miss unless you’re paying attention, but once you do, it stays with you.

🌺 Why Didn’t We See Any Red Honeysuckle?

As we rode along the trail, I found myself wondering why we didn’t see any red honeysuckle. Maybe next time we head a little farther north on the Tanglefoot Trail, we’ll spot some. I’ve always been curious about the difference, if there really is one.

From what I understand, the yellow honeysuckle we saw growing wild is the kind that tends to spread on its own along fence lines and trails. It seems to thrive in places that are left a little natural. The red varieties, though, are usually planted more intentionally—often in gardens or around homes—and don’t show up quite the same way out in the wild.

So it’s not that the red honeysuckle isn’t around…you’re just less likely to come across it on a quiet trail ride like this. Still, it gives us something to look for next time.

🌿 Simple Moments Are Still There

Sometimes it’s the smallest things that end up meaning the most. A quiet ride, a stretch of trail, and a patch of wild honeysuckle you might have passed right by. Spending that time together—even something as simple as a bike ride—makes those moments feel a little more special. It’s a good reminder that simple moments are still there—you just have to slow down enough to notice them.
