How to Add Lemon Slices to a Vase (and Keep Them in Place)

I love how adding lemon slices to a vase gives floral arrangements such a fresh, bright appeal. There’s just something about that pop of yellow against soft blooms that instantly makes everything feel lighter and more inviting. This is a lemon vase centerpiece that Carrie and her friend Rachel created recently, and it really turned out beautiful.
And the best part? It was surprisingly easy to do.
I don’t have step-by-step photos from when they made it, but if you’ve ever wondered how to add lemon slices to a vase—or struggled with how to keep lemon slices from floating—I can walk you through a simple method that works and gives you that clean, layered look every time.
Start with Crystal Clear Vases
To create this look, you’ll need two clear vases—this is the key to making those lemon slices in a vase stay beautifully in place.
You’re going to nest one vase inside the other, leaving a small space between them where your citrus slices will go. Try to keep that gap fairly narrow—about ½” to 1″ is ideal. The tighter the space, the less room the slices have to float or shift, which is exactly what you want.
Place your lemon slices between the inner and outer vase, arranging them as you go for that clean, layered look. Once they’re in place, you can gently add water to that outer space to help hold everything steady.
The inner vase is what will hold your flowers and water, so it should be close in height to your outer vase for the best appearance.
Below is a similar setup I used with coffee beans as a filler (no water in that outer space). It’s the same concept and a great way to see how this method works. You can easily swap in other fillers too—think jelly beans at Easter, peppermints at Christmas, or even small seasonal items for different holidays.
Simple, Fresh, and So Pretty
Sometimes the simplest ideas really are the most beautiful. This lemon vase centerpiece is a perfect example—clean, fresh, and just enough detail to make it feel special without being complicated.
Using this double-vase method makes all the difference when it comes to lemon slices in a vase. Everything stays neatly in place, the layers look intentional, and you don’t have to fuss with slices floating around or shifting out of line.
And of course, the arrangement itself turned out just as lovely—soft hydrangeas paired with those bright lemon slices create such a light and welcoming look.
I’ll leave you with this final image of Carrie adding the finishing touch… simple, yet beautiful—the arrangement and Carrie 💛
