Decorative Sign Ideas Inspired by Photos and Memories
Have you ever wondered where decorative sign ideas come from?
Many of our Trendy Tree Exclusive Signs begin with nothing more than a thought. Carrie, David and I share an idea with AI, describe the colors, style and details we have in mind, and wait to see what it creates.
Sometimes it is right on the money the first time. Sometimes it is so far from what we pictured that all we can do is laugh and start over! Maybe our Southern way of describing things gets a little lost in translation every now and then. 😂
We may be able to adjust the colors, background or arrangement until the design is exactly what we were looking for. Other times, we have to scrap the image and begin again. But more often than not, the finished design turns out even better than we imagined.
Some of my favorite decorative sign ideas, however, have started with our own photographs, personal belongings or little moments from everyday life. Those signs have a story behind them, and I thought it would be fun to share a few.
Sunflowers from Wise Farms
The fresh sunflowers had been gathered at Wise Farms, a local pumpkin farm and fall festival destination. I brought them home and placed them in a tall blue watering can. They looked so pretty against the blue container that I had to take a picture.
At the time, I wasn’t arranging them for a sign or planning for the photograph to become anything in particular. I simply liked how they looked on the porch.
Later, we used that photograph as inspiration for a fall sign. The blue watering can and sunflowers remained the stars, but AI helped turn the simple photograph into a cozy fall porch scene with pumpkins, colorful leaves, a plaid pillow and the words Hello Fall.
The finished sign doesn’t duplicate the photograph exactly, but you can certainly see where the idea began.
That is one of the things I enjoy most about this process. An ordinary moment on the back porch can become something completely new.
An Old Bridge Along the Tanglefoot Trail
This old wooden bridge sits just off the Tanglefoot Trail, where I frequently ride my bike.
It would be easy to pass by something like this without giving it much thought, but the worn boards, narrow path and old metal gate caught my attention. I stopped long enough to take a photograph, not knowing at the time that it would eventually inspire a sign.
For the finished design, we kept the weathered bridge and gate but imagined the scene during the prettiest part of fall. The trees became brighter with red, orange and golden leaves, and the sky was filled with fluffy white clouds.
It is still the same little bridge—only dressed up in its fall best.
I especially like this sign because it began with a real place close to home. Someone else may see a peaceful autumn path, but I see a familiar spot along the Tanglefoot Trail.
Welcome to Our Patch
Another photograph taken while biking along the Tanglefoot Trail became the inspiration for our Welcome to Our Patch sign. The whistlestop at Ingomar is always beautifully decorated for the seasons, and you can see the community’s pride in every thoughtful detail.
This fall display was overflowing with croton leaves, yellow mums, ornamental cabbage, pumpkins and gourds arranged in an old wooden wagon. It was such a pretty combination of fall colors and textures that, naturally, I had to stop and take a picture.
The finished sign does not copy the display piece by piece. Instead, it borrows some of its most memorable details—the colorful leaves, purple cabbage, yellow flowers and pumpkins—and arranges them in and around a weathered galvanized container.
This is a good example of how a photograph can provide the starting point without dictating the entire design. We can keep the colors and feeling that caught our attention while giving the finished sign its own personality.
A Favorite Piece of Pottery
This floral sign began with a favorite piece of pottery from Carrie’s home.
The pottery had a softly aged finish and a beautiful ribbed texture that seemed perfect for a quiet, elegant floral arrangement. We used it as inspiration for a container filled with muted purple hydrangeas and wispy eucalyptus.
Unfortunately, we couldn’t locate the original pottery for a new photograph. It has apparently found itself a very good hiding place!
Even without the original photograph, the sign still reminds us that decorative sign ideas can come from something as simple as an interesting bowl, vase or container sitting on a shelf at home.
Memories of School Valentines
Do you remember exchanging little paper valentines at school?
This Be Mine sign was inspired by the old-fashioned valentines I remember from grammar school in the 1950s. They often featured rosy-cheeked children, puppies, hearts and sweet little sayings.
Our sign keeps that cheerful vintage feeling with a little girl, a young mail carrier delivering valentines and, of course, an adorable puppy. It isn’t a copy of one particular card, but it brings back the same innocent sweetness of those childhood valentines.
Seeing it reminds me of decorated shoeboxes, stacks of little envelopes and the excitement of finding out who had given you a valentine.
Some memories really do stay with you.
Maggie’s Homegrown Sunflowers
I had to include Maggie’s sunflowers, even though I shared them in the Trendy Tree post too.
Maggie, Carrie’s daughter, grew these beautiful flowers in Carrie’s backyard. We used photographs of both her bright yellow sunflower and her deeper rust-colored sunflower to inspire two different signs.
Sunflower images are certainly easy to find, but these were not just any sunflowers. We know who planted them, grew them and took care of them.
That makes the finished signs special to us.
To everyone else, they may simply be pretty sunflower signs. To our family, they will always be Maggie’s sunflowers.
Inspiration Really Is Everywhere
These decorative sign ideas began in very different places, but each one holds a connection to our family, our homes or the places around us.
Ideas can come from almost anywhere—a flower in the backyard, an old bridge beside a bike trail, a fall display, a piece of pottery or a memory from childhood.
AI helps us turn those ideas into artwork, but the most meaningful part often comes before any designing begins. It comes from noticing the little things around us and remembering why they caught our attention in the first place.
That may be my favorite part of creating these signs. A familiar photograph or an ordinary object can become a keepsake that brings a place, person or sweet memory back to mind.
Sometimes the story behind a sign is just as special as the sign itself.
