How Cold Butter Nearly Took Me Down!
Last night’s dinner took a surprising turn when I put a pot of hot potatoes into the mixer to make mashed potatoes. Butter is so much firmer than margarine, I thought I could just break it into and couldn’t, so I tossed the whole stick in.
I threw the cold stick of butter into the mixer, but instead of blending in, the mixer launched it right back out—hitting me in the chest like a football, along with some hot mashed potatoes for good measure. Lesson learned. Next time I’ll take the time to take a knife and slice up the butter.

Homemade Butter
Have you ever tried making butter? I accidentally did once by over-blending whipped cream, though we didn’t actually try to eat it. It looks like it might not be too hard to make according to The Pioneer Woman. It would be something to try on a day when you don’t have anything else to do))) Here’s a link, she has a great post with images: How to Make Butter
The Takeaway
So, what’s the takeaway from my butter mishap? Well, besides the fact that my kitchen now has a butter-based defense system, it’s clear that cold butter and fast mixers don’t mix well. Next time, I’ll let that butter soften before trying again.
Moral of the Story
Butter’s not a team player until it warms up!
