Winter Craft: Valentine Cone Trees

valentine craft make a cone tree

February 14!

Valentine’s Day is just around the corner and I saw these cute Valentine Cone Trees at the Dallas market last week…..perfect for a winter Valentine craft. You may see them in retail stores, but my mind immediately went to….I can make this!

Snowed In

However, we are experiencing some mighty cold weather in Mississippi right now and the streets are covered in snow and ice so we are staying nice and safe inside. This post will tell you what I “would” do if I “could” get out and buy some crafting supplies)))

Valentine Cone Trees

These Valentine cone trees are made of Styrofoam and have felt hearts applied to them. Easy to re-create I think. Styrofoam cones can be expensive so I would probably try making them out of poster paper.

The red and pink candlesticks also prompted another “I can do this.” Old candlesticks, or inexpensive new ones lend themselves well to a fresh coat of paint. Add some candles to go with the cone trees and there you have added a little bit of Valentine’s decor to your space.)))

I don’t have any poster board at home to show you how to make the perfect cone tree, but it is easy. Here’s a link to a video I found on YouTube by Design by D9 that explains how to do it.

Here’s What I Would Try

Supplies & Steps for Crafting Valentine Cone Trees

  • Make a paper cone from poster board of the desired size
  • Paint the cone with light coats of spray paint, acrylic paint, or even glitter paint
  • Decorate with hearts made from felt, vinyl, or paper using craft glue or hot glue

If you have a Cricut, this is a perfect project! Cut out assorted sizes and colors of hearts and stick to the paper cones. But, you may be like me. I have a Cricut….it’s right beside my desk and I have yet to learn how to use it!

Dollar Tree

You can find all sorts of decorations at Dollar Tree to use on a paper Valentine cone tree. They have packages of pre-cut felt hearts, stickers, and ornaments. Puffy balls would be pretty too! It would probably take several packages to cover a cone tree depending on the size.

Here’s another video from Design by D9 demonstrating how to cover paper cone trees with strips of crepe paper, silk petals, and crepe paper puffs. Her technique is similar to what I used to decorate pinatas when the grandchildren were little – strips of tissue paper cut into fringe and glued on whatever shape the pinata was. I made all sorts of shapes using cardboard boxes, balloons, ect. I even made a 36″ Spiderman using a blow-up Spiderman toy. After the paper mache dried, I just deflated the toy and covered it in tissue paper fringe. That toy was so well balanced, it even stood by itself! lol

Stay Tuned!

When the weather warms up and we can get out again, I may have to try these cone trees. I love the third one in the video above….the crepe paper puff. Time consuming I’m sure, but so cute!

Paper cone trees would be easy to decorate in patriotic colors, or as candy corn for Halloween. Let me know if you try this craft. I’d love to see how yours turned out!

And thanks to Design by D9 for sharing her crafting skills! Check out her YouTube channel for more crafts, she has tons of them!
