Pumpkin Magic: DIY Styrofoam Craft

Get into the Halloween spirit with this Styrofoam Pumpkin Craft! This easy DIY project turns simple Styrofoam pumpkins from Walmart into stylish fabric-covered pumpkins. Perfect for any skill level and only a couple of products are required.

Styrofoam Pumpkins

Choose various sizes of solid Styrofoam pumpkins with stems that are hot glued on. Opt for lighter colored pumpkins, particularly if you’re using thin fabric that might let the pumpkin’s color show through.

Walmart has assorted sizes and colors and two styles of finish. The regular smooth surface and a new flocked or velvety surface. They are the same price. I have another tutorial coming up where I used the velvety surface pumpkins and I feel like the fabric clings a little better to them versus the smooth slick one. I used both styles of the pumpkins in my fall decorations, some I covered and others I left just as they were. They are so pretty!

Start by gently wiggling the stem of your Styrofoam pumpkin back and forth until it comes off easily. Then, use needle-nose pliers to remove any old hot glue from the stem.

Fabrics for Styrofoam Pumpkin Crafts

I prefer using materials with a one-way or two-way stretch, although non-stretchy fabrics are okay too; they just need a bit more effort to stay smooth. Thicker fabrics are more difficult to poke in the hole in the pumpkin. Thin fabrics are easier to work with but need to be dense enough that you can’t see the pumpkin through it.

Measure your pumpkin’s width and add a few inches. For instance, if your pumpkin is around 7 to 8 inches wide, you’ll need about 9-10 inches on each side, totaling a piece of material about 20-22 inches. If there’s excess fabric as you begin covering the pumpkin, you can easily trim it off.

Hobby Lobby was the source for my fabrics.

Cover the Styrofoam Pumpkin

Position the pumpkin on the wrong side of the fabric. Pull the edges up and tuck them into the opening where the stem was. Use the handle of a wooden spoon to push the fabric into the hole, continually turning and tucking the fabric with the spoon. Once the fabric is secure, reattach the stem. You might choose to use hot glue to secure the stem, but if you’re considering changing the color next year like I do, you might skip the glue for easier modifications later.

Halloween Decor

This Styrofoam pumpkin craft is just one way we’ve added a festive touch to Carrie’s home. Below are some images. Cody from the How I See It Blog crafted the mantelpiece during a MerryWeen Workshop at Trendy Tree recently. He also made the stunning centerpiece featuring a large black spider. Carrie’s little poodle, Saint, was checking out the centerpiece when I snapped the photo—he’s not part of the decor!

If you want to learn how to create stunning wreaths, centerpieces, and more, consider the MerryWeen Workshop. The tutorial replays are available at a very reasonable price! Dona from On a Whimm Wreaths & Decor by Dona was one of the designers, and together with Cody from the How I See It Blog, they crafted some beautiful projects for Fall, Halloween, and Christmas.

I was lucky enough to receive a fall mantelpiece and door hanger made by Dona, and I’m excited to share them with you soon!

Get Ready for Halloween!

Do you enjoy Halloween as much as we do? It’s always been a fun time for us especially when the grandkids were small. We’ve never been into the gory, scary stuff….just cute and maybe a little scary sometimes. I miss the days when we used to have a big backyard party for friends and extended family. We would decorate the back porch, the kid’s playhouse, and the backyard. It was fun with a small hayride, apple dunking, outdoor movies, and plenty of food! Even the adults would come in costume.

But as you get older, you have to give up some of those fun things that you used to do. Now I’m waiting for Carrie to take on the tradition)))
