Best Time to Drink a Chocolate Protein Smoothie?

Post-workout: After exercise, your body needs protein and carbs to help repair and build muscle. A protein smoothie is a quick and easy way to get these nutrients, helping with recovery.

Breakfast: A protein smoothie in the morning can keep you full and energized, helping you start your day on the right foot. It’s a convenient and healthy option for busy mornings. Just today, my grandson Matt was running late for school. He usually stops by for a smoothie, but this morning, I ended up handing it to him through his car window as he drove by. I never thought I’d be doing curbside service in my retirement!

Mid-Morning or Afternoon Snack: A smoothie can be a great snack to curb hunger between meals. The protein and healthy fats will keep you satisfied until your next meal.

Leftover Smoothie? How to Store and Revive It

My chocolate protein smoothie yields about two 16 oz servings. And I have decided that 16 oz is too much for me to drink and I’m finding that it’s even a little much for Matt too. I usually wind up wasting some if I don’t put it in smaller cups.

I’ve started putting any leftover smoothie in 9 oz cups in the freezer. Just cover the tops with tin foil. I have 32 oz, 16 oz, and 9 oz cups in my pantry. I’m on the lookout for 12 oz cups that I think may be the perfect size for us. I’m sure they are available on Amazon, but I just received 100 32 oz cups for loaded teas and flavored waters. Amazon is going to think I’m in the drink business!

Place a frozen cup of smoothie in the microwave for 10-15 sec. Depending on the size of the cup, it may only take a few seconds to thaw it enough for stirring. Be careful though, you can very easily thaw it too much.

Freezing can sometimes dull the flavor. After blending, taste the smoothie and consider adding a little more creamer, sweetener, or a pinch of cocoa powder to enhance the flavor. I like French Vanilla Coffee Creamer (sugar-free).

Most of the time, just stirring it up will return the smoothie to its creamy state. If it’s too icy, return it to the blender for a few seconds. Avoid adding more ice as it will weaken the flavor a bit.

These tips should help you enjoy a refreshed, creamy smoothie even after it’s been stored in the freezer.

Garnish

I like to add a bit of whipped cream to the top of smoothies and for the chocolate, drizzle a bit of chocolate syrup inside the cup. Top it off with some chocolate sprinkles or a bit of toasted coconut.

  • In a blender, combine a chocolate protein shake, a frozen banana, yogurt, chocolate syrup, sugar replacement, vanilla extract, and ice. Blend until smooth. Pour the mixture into three 16 oz cups and serve immediately.

Notes

Whipped cream and sprinkles are optional. Drizzle a bit of chocolate syrup inside the cup before pouring the smoothie.
Toasted coconut is another good topping.
I freeze the extra servings. When I’m ready to enjoy one, I microwave it for 10-15 seconds to thaw slightly, then stir or blend it in a small Ninja blender.
