👉 Watch the short video below to see how I used the ribbon strip bow method to perk up a simple fall pumpkin yard sign — a quick way to add instant seasonal charm with just a few ribbon scraps.

What You’ll Need 🎀

This ribbon strip bow was made using leftover ribbons from past projects. You can certainly use new ribbon, but you only need a few short pieces of each style — which makes this the perfect project for using up your stash!

Choose ribbons in a mix of widths and patterns (2.5”, 1.5”, or even 7/8” work great). A little variety in color and texture gives your bow more depth and interest.

I used a Bowdabra to hold my ribbons in place while I worked, but you can use an EZ Bowmaker, Em’s Bowmaker, or even just your hand if your bow isn’t too large or bulky. Whatever works best for you!

How to Make a Ribbon Strip Bow 🎀

The gist of making this bow is simple — cut your ribbon strips to the width you want your finished bow, then gradually make a few of the ribbons shorter, layering the shorter ones on top.

For the best results, use wired ribbon so you can easily shape it by running your fingers underneath each strip to give it a soft curl. Once all your ribbons are stacked, secure them tightly with a chenille stem, binding wire, zip tie, or floral wire.

If you want to hide the mechanics, just fold a small piece of ribbon over the center and tie it in the back.

Don’t be afraid to mix patterns and solids — a little contrast adds personality! You can go with a single-color theme for a coordinated look or mix it up with bold patterns and unexpected colors. It doesn’t have to be all matchy-matchy to be beautiful. And honestly, you can throw in a little black ribbon with just about any seasonal color palette. Black adds nice depth and helps other colors stand out.

One Technique, Endless Possibilities

Here are two fun examples of how this simple ribbon strip bow. One made for a bright Halloween sign and another for a cheerful Christmas one. Both were created using the same easy process!
