Fall Porch Planter Ideas
My fall porch planters needed a seasonal refreshing now that fall is in the air! As the season changes, I’m trimming away the spent hydrangea blooms and adding a burst of color with mums in full bloom and some that are still budding to spread out the vibrant show. To finish the look, I’m tucking in a few white and orange pumpkins, giving the planters that cozy autumn feel.
Before and After
As you can see, the hydrangea blooms had become lanky and almost dead. They looked great in the spring and early summer. But with heavy rains they became top heavy and never really stood back up. I love having them in the pots though for booms and greenery all summer.
But it’s time to trim the dying blooms away. The impatients were still blooming so I didn’t cut the back. The ivy trailing to the ground has to be trimmed from time to time to keep it up off the porch floor.
I trimmed the hydrangea stems back to about 3-4 inches and simply placed the pot of mums right into the planter for an easy fall porch planter update. There’s no need to remove them from their plastic pots — at least, I don’t bother. Just make sure to keep them well-watered, but not too soggy. It’s a simple way to refresh your fall porch planter without much hassle!
This pot has yellow and white mums, though the white mums are still in bud form, so they’re not showing much in the image. When choosing mums, look for ones with plenty of buds to extend the blooming period over time. But if you need instant color, you can always go for a fully blooming pot of mums and enjoy vibrant color for a few weeks. That’s one of the great things about mums – they offer flexibility for any fall display!
