Homemade Corn Dogs: A Comfort Food Classic for All Ages
Is there anything more nostalgic than a corn dog? Whether you grew up calling them pronto pups, corn dogs or corndogs, this classic snack brings back memories of state fairs, school lunches, and cozy meals at home. Easy to make and always a hit with both kids and adults, homemade corn dogs are the perfect blend of crispy, golden batter and savory hot dog. Today, I’m sharing a simple recipe I made for lunch—complete with squash fries on the side!
How to Make Homemade Corn Dogs
Making corn dogs at home is easier than you might think! Start by choosing your favorite hot dogs or frankfurters—today I used Bryan Juicy Jumbos. Pat them dry with a paper towel, then cut them in half if needed to fit your fryer or pan. Insert a skewer and lightly dust each piece with cornstarch (or flour if that’s what you have on hand). This helps the batter stick better.
Before you begin dipping, mix up your batter—flour, cornmeal, eggs, and buttermilk—and refrigerate it until you’re ready to fry. The batter should be thick—thicker than cake batter—so it clings well to the dogs.
Once your oil reaches 350–375°F, dip each dog into the batter, let the excess drip off, and carefully lower it into the oil. Fry for about 3 minutes, or until golden brown. Don’t dip the corn dog until you are ready to put it in the oil.
Drain on paper towels, sprinkle with salt if you like, and serve hot with mustard, ketchup, or your favorite dipping sauce!
Someone asked…..”did you wash the craft sticks beforehand?” No, I did not. If one of us dies, we all do.😳 When we were kids, we used leftover popsicle sticks, I think we rinsed those off for my mother to make corndogs))))
Watch Them Sizzle!
Here’s the fun part—frying up those homemade corn dogs to golden perfection. This short video shows just how quick and easy it is once the oil is hot and the batter is ready. Crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside… just like you remember!
What Comfort Food Brings Back Memories for You?
Does anyone else remember Fiddlesticks from the fair? Those rectangle-shaped vanilla ice cream bars dipped in chocolate and rolled in peanuts? Just thinking about them brings back the sound of the midway and the smell of funnel cakes in the air. Whether it’s a corndog, a Fiddlestick, or a slice of warm apple pie, we all have those nostalgic bites that take us back. What’s yours? Let me know in the comments!
