Rooster in the Kitchen: A Tale of Good Luck and Lost Memories

metal 10" x 10" rooster sign exclusive Trendy Tree design

Have you ever heard the saying that a rooster in the kitchen brings good luck? Whether it’s true or just an old wives’ tale, roosters have long been a symbol of protection and prosperity in the home.

Recently, Taalor at Trendy Tree created a charming 10″ x 10″ metal rooster sign, which reminded me of a tacky Christmas gift from my mother—a metal rooster figurine she gave to me and each of my sisters. At the time, we all thought it was a bit funny and really kind of ugly. Somewhere along the way, mine got lost or misplaced (I may have even thrown it away!). But now, all these years later, I find myself wishing I still had that little rooster – tackiness and all. It’s funny how certain things take on new meaning with time, isn’t it?

Why Roosters Are Thought to Bring Good Luck to the Kitchen

In folklore, a rooster in the kitchen is seen as a symbol of good luck, protection, and prosperity. Many believe that roosters help keep away negative energy, especially in the kitchen, which is the heart of the home. The rooster’s crow at dawn represents a fresh start and new opportunities. Whether it’s an old tale or a cultural tradition, roosters remain a popular and meaningful symbol in home décor.

Now I don’t know if that is why Mother gave us the roosters. I didn’t know about the folklore until years later, so she probably didn’t either. I guess she just wanted to give us something to remember her by…..and it worked! She had a strange sense of humor))

A Gift Only My Mother Could Think Of: The Epilady Experience

As I mentioned, my mother had a unique sense of humor. You’d rarely catch her in a full belly laugh—just a little grin with a glimmer of humor in her eyes. But she was a fantastic storyteller, and she could have us all in stitches, even if she never cracked up herself.

I’m not sure if the rooster or the infamous Epilady came first, but the Epilady was definitely a gift to remember from the 1980s. All three of us sisters got one, exactly the same.

The Epilady was a big deal when it came out. It was one of the first gadgets to promise smooth skin by removing hair from the root. Yes, from the root!

It was a torture device! Being the youngest and more hip (I thought) than my sisters, I gritted my teeth and was determined to tough it out. My older sister, though, screamed so loud the first time she used it that I’m pretty sure it went straight back into the box, never to be seen again. My middle sister, the one who kept her rooster, was like me—she wanted to give it a fair try. But in the end, that was one gift that stayed tucked away in its cute little bag, never to see the light of day again!

The Rooster Resurfaces: A Family Keepsake Passed On

Since my rooster was long gone, I decided to check with my nieces to see if either of them had held on to their mom’s rooster. As luck would have it, my middle sister had kept hers. My niece passed it along to my older sister’s daughter.

When I texted my niece Betty about it, she quickly sent me a picture! There it was, proudly displayed on her kitchen counter, right next to a sign that said, “My Roost… My Rules.”

One of the wayward roosters had been rescued! She took it outside to get me a better pic. I would hate for you to miss any of it’s details.🙄

I told you it was rather unique)))) I couldn’t talk her out of it of course, but I tried)))

When Letting Go Turns Into Regret

It’s hard to hold on to everything over the years. Life gets busy, and sometimes we let go of things that seem insignificant at the time. But realize much later how much they meant to us. Whether it’s a small figurine, a gift, a keepsake, or a quirky rooster, these objects become symbols of moments and people we cherish. The regret often sets in when we wish we’d kept those items, because now they represent memories we can’t easily replace. It’s not the thing itself, but the connection it holds to a time or a person we can never get back.

Taalor is going to create a metal sign for me using the image of the rooster. Once it’s finished, I’ll frame it and place it in my kitchen. Maybe having a “rooster in the kitchen” will bring good luck and prosperity. But even if it doesn’t, it’ll make me smile and think of my mother every time I see it.
